Default 2011

It's fairly obvious at this point that the Mets are not making the playoffs. It's not like we really can complain about this season. They were supposed to be fighting for last place with the Nationals, but there a .500 ball club.

I think it's time we look to next year. Here's what our roster would look like right now:

C Thole
1B Davis
2B Castillo
SS Reyes
3B Wright
LF Bay
CF Beltran/Pagan
RF Beltran/Pagan

SP Santana
SP Pelfrey
SP Neisse
SP
SP

OF
2B/SS
1B/3B Murphy
C
BN

What roster moves do you want the Mets to make befor opening day 2011?

Red face

Most important thing to me is pitching. Start by going hard for Cliff Lee, tell the Yankees to GTFO and sign him to whatever it takes. If not Lee, I'd like to sign a pitcher (or 2) from this list:
Bronson Arroyo (34) - $11MM club option with a $2MM buyout
Jon Garland (31) - $6.75MM mutual option with a $600K buyout
Hiroki Kuroda (36))
Ted Lilly (35)Kevin Millwood (36)
Kevin Millwood (36)
Brett Myers (30) - $8MM mutual option with a $2MM buyout
Vicente Padilla (33)
Javier Vazquez (34)
Jake Westbrook (33)

And then one or two from this list:
Erik Bedard (32) - $8MM mutual option
Jorge De La Rosa (30)
Justin Duchscherer (33)
Jeff Francis (29) - $7MM club option
Freddy Garcia (35)
Rich Harden (29) - $11MM mutual option with $1MM buyout
Livan Hernandez (36)
Brad Penny (33)
Ben Sheets (32)
Brandon Webb (32)
Dontrelle Willis (29)
Chris Young (32) - $8.5MM club option

I'd also release Ollie and Castillo, and non-tender Francoeur and Maine. Replace Castillo with Hudson, Eckstein, or Lopez, or just make Ruben Tejada the starter.

Cool

First, I'd add Dickey as the #5 starter. He may not repeat his current stellar performance but he's earned that spot. I'd drop Ollie and Castillo. Addition by subtraction. A decison has to be made on the short term potential of Tejada and Mejia. We'll need some hitters on the bench. Real issue is the offense is erratic and sub-par. Given the contracts, improvement will have to come from increased productivity from Bay and Beltran. We'll need a solid #4 outfielder who can hit if Beltran does not return to form.

As bad as it looks now, a return to form of Bay and Beltran and the addition of a quality #4 starter and a little offense at second base ( Tejada if ready or O'dog) and this team could be a real contender. Alot of issues have been addressed by the likes of Davis, Thole, Dickey, Parnell. A couple more good pieces and we could be there.

Steve Popper of the record indicates that the Mets are talking about lowering payroll next year for the second season in a row.

Also, they really need to stop playing Cora. Only 15 more games 'till we have to pay him $2M again next year.

I'm okay with that. A good team needs a stellar club house guy like Cora.

The problem is Cora can't hit. Find someone who is actually useful off the bench to be a good clubhouse presence.

I agree. In addition, he plays with great baseball instincts and knowledge.

That doesn't mean much when you are never on base.
